“Does truth have a moral?”
The Sea of Monsters is the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan.
As Percy nears the end of his seventh-grade, he is concerned about a vivid dream he had of Grover. When Percy and Tyson are bullied by a group of new boys at school, Annabeth arrives to help destroy the monsters and soon they leave for the Camp Half-Blood.
They arrive to find Thalia’s tree, which protects the Camp Half-Blood, is dying and campers are under relentless attack from several monsters. With the aid of Hermes Percy, Tyson and Annabeth sneak out of the camp and embark on a journey to find The Golden Fleece to save the tree and The Camp Half-Blood.
“A sliver of ice ran through my chest. Now I understood why the camp was in danger. The magical borders were failing because Thalia’s tree was dying.”
While I was reading the second book, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hope. Maybe because I enjoyed the first book a lot and expected The Sea of Monsters would be a better sequel. And now as I’ve read all five books, I can definitely say that it is my least favourite book in the series.
The story alternated between slow and fast pace but most of the time, it felt dragged. The story took an unexpected turn in the end which earned another star from me. Riordan’s writing style and world building are wonderful and I love Percy and Annabeth even more but I missed Grover. I love how his books have an element of humour and wit along with being informative and educational.
“But how did you know where we were?” Annabeth asked.
“Advanced planning, my dear. I figured you would wash up near Miami if you made it out of the Sea of Monsters alive. Almost everything strange washes up near Miami.”

Excellent review! It’s been a while since I read this series, but this definitely was my least favorite as well. I don’t know why, but it wasn’t as feel-good as the other ones if my memory serves me right… 😛

Thank you! I think it was dragged a little and the story wasn’t as brilliant as in others.

I’m skipping the spoiler parts, but um, Grover goes missing? Bless his soul. As much as I relate to Percy, Grover is so lovable so far. So I’m hoping he is found. Most second books in a long series are terrible and usually just a set-up for the next book. I hope the rest of the series is awesome.

Yeah, Grover goes missing! You’ll find almost every characters quite lovable except the gods of course! The rest of the series is really awesome! 😀

Yeah, so far I am struggling to pick a favourite. Percy is more relatable, but Grover is adorable, and Annabeth is really smart. I like them all!

Yeah this was definitely my least fave in the series like I never finished it when I first tried reading it, then I picked it up again last year and whilst I enjoyed it it’s 100% the weakest
